"When we got back (from the mission to destroy the Japanese ships that were shelling our newly-established installations at Mindoro), we were told that we would be recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross. That was the last we ever heard of that. That was understandable because we were losing crews and planes so fast during that period that there wasn't time for things like that."

The War Experience web site has been designed as an educational resource for teachers and their students as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about individuals who served in the Second World War or were affected by it.

The site was created to support THE WAR, a 14-hour documentary from acclaimed filmmaker, Ken Burns that focuses on Americans and their experience in World War Two. THE WAR is being broadcast on more than 100 other public television stations nationwide beginning in September, 2007.

On these pages, you will find stories created by graduate students at the University of Houston, as well as personal stories submitted by individuals who were affected directly or indirectly by the war and its aftermath. In addition, visitors to this site are invited to submit their own stories by clicking on the "Share Your Story" link and following the on-screen instructions.

The web site is the result of an ongoing collaboration between HoustonPBS and the Instructional Technology Program at the University of Houston's College of Education.
